Decentralised Renewables for Zimbabwe Agriculture: IRENA

Agriculture is a critical sector in Zimbabwe, accounting for between 11% and 14% of the country’s gross domestic product. The sector employs 53% of the workforce and supports the livelihoods and food security of 70% of the population. Smallholder agricultural operations, typically managed by a single family or individuals, produce 70% of staple foods. However, most of these farmers have no access to electricity, with only 12% connected to the grid. Findings from the report identify critical energy gaps, such as limited access to water pumps, cold storage and post-harvest processing equipment.

Zimbabwe launches 66 MW of solar projects

According to the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA), seven solar PV projects totaling 66.6 MW are presently in advanced stages of construction and are anticipated to be grid-connected by the end of this year. The Malilangwe Trust and Sustainable Agriculture Technology in Zimbabwe have invited bids for the selection of a company to provide engineering, design, procurement and construction (EPC) services for a 4.5 MWp solar PV plant in the country. The plant will be located 30 km from Chiredzi, a town in Masvingo province. The last date to submit bids in June 30, 2021

Zimbabwe announces tax exemption for solar energy producers

The government of Zimbabwe has announced that it intends to exempt investors in solar energy from paying taxes for a period of five years. The move is targeted at attracting investment from solar energy producers in the country. This new move is set to complement other measures taken by the Zimbabwean government, such as the duty-free import of solar energy production equipment.
