Terna, the Italian national grid operator, and IPTO, the Greek Transmission System Operator have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop a new electricity interconnection named GRITA 2 between the two countries. It is a three-year agreement which establishes a joint governance framework to oversee project planning and coordination, along with future agreements for managing the procurement of cables and converter stations.
The planned high-voltage direct current link will have a transmission capacity of up to 1,000 MW and span around 300 km, including 240 km of subsea cable laid at depths of up to 1,000 metres. It will add to the existing 500 MW interconnection that has been in operation since 2002. The total estimated investment for the project is approximately €1.9 billion.
GRITA 2 will enhance grid reliability, facilitate renewable energy integration, and boost cross-border electricity trade. The project will support decarbonisation goals while strengthening Italy and Greece as strategic electricity hubs in the Mediterranean region.
