TotalEnergies has concluded a deal with Scatec to acquire 100 per cent of its subsidiary SN Power, which has interests in renewable hydropower projects in Africa. Furthermore, SN Power owns 51 per cent of the projects, alongside Norfund and British International Investment (BII).

Through this transaction, TotalEnergies will obtain a 28.3 percent stake in the Bujagali hydropower plant in Uganda which is subject to certain conditions. With a capacity of 250 MW, the plant meets over 25 per cent of the country’s peak electricity demand. The company will also take on smaller ownership shares in two projects under development: one in Rwanda with a capacity of 260 MW and another in Malawi with a capacity of 360 MW.

In July 2024, TotalEnergies approved a 100 MW/200 MWh battery storage project in Dahlem, North Rhine-Westphalia, marking its first project following the acquisition of Kyon Energy. With an investment of over €75 million, Saft is expected to supply the storage technology, while Quadra Energy will handle marketing. Commercial operations are anticipated to begin in the second half of 2026.

REGlobal’s Views: Along with its increasing focus on renewable power projects, TotalEnergies is also working on expanding its capabilities in the hydropower space. It has 218 MW installed in Europe and 3.5 GW under development in Mozambique and India. The company plans to diversify its energy mix in order to increase the share of non-fossil fuel fuels in the energy mix and also, make itself secure from global disruptions.
