TotalEnergies has inked an agreement with RWE to acquire a 50 per cent stake in two offshore wind projects, N-9.1 and N-9.2, in the North Sea. Both projects, each with a capacity of 2 GW, are situated 110 km off the German coast. The projects come with 25-year licences that can be extended to 35 years. RWE was awarded the sites in August in the latest offshore wind auction.

Moreover, preliminary environmental, geological, and oceanographic studies have been carried out by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. These studies will provide critical data to help RWE and TotalEnergies plan the development of the wind farms. Investment decisions are expected to be made by 2027 for N-9.1 and by 2028 for N-9.2. Meanwhile, construction will begin by 2029 and 2030 respectively, with commissioning planned for 2031 and 2032.

The German Federal Network Agency announced in August 2024 that RWE secured the N-9.1 and N-9.2 sites in the North Sea as part of the latest offshore wind auction. These sites, located about 110 – 115 km northwest of the island of Borkum, near the Dutch Exclusive Economic Zone, are each capable of hosting offshore wind farms with a total capacity of 2,000 MW. RWE’s winning bid for these sites amounts to €250 million. The offshore wind auction included three areas—N-9.1, N-9.2, and N-9.3—with a combined total capacity of 5,500 MW.

REGlobal’s Views: This deal strengthens both the companies’ presence in the German offshore wind market, and builds on the partnership of the companies in the Dutch offshore wind project OranjeWind.
