Uniper has chosen ITM Power as the electrolyser supplier for its green hydrogen production facility at the Killingholme site in the Humber region. The selection follows a detailed tendering and evaluation process, where shortlisted suppliers were assessed based on their capability to meet the project’s technical and delivery requirements.

There was a public consultation on Uniper’s proposals in November 2024. Following this, the project was announced as one of the 27 projects shortlisted in the UK Government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round 2 (HAR2) programme in April 2025.

The Humber H2ub® project is proposed to have an initial electrolyser capacity of 120 MW for green hydrogen production, with scope for future expansion by an additional 200 MW or more. The initial 120 MW phase will utilise six of ITM Power’s 20 MW POSEIDON electrolyser units.

The facility is expected to commence operations by 2029, subject to a final investment decision (FID) anticipated in 2026. A full supply contract will be formalised following the completion of the engineering phase and Uniper’s FID.

REGlobal’s Views: Uniper has set a target to become carbon neutral by 2040, and it is focusing on integrating low-carbon hydrogen in its operations as part of its long-term energy transition strategy. The company already has a significant gas infrastructure and low-carbon hydrogen will replace some of the existing natural gas operations, thereby helping the company to reduce its carbon emissions.
