Cost economics and policy landscape for the Indian floating solar sector

India’s floating solar segment is at a transition point. Having demonstrated technical feasibility through a limited number of large projects, it must now shift decisively towards more scalable deployment. The pace of deployment needs to pick up too. Achieving even 10 per cent of the 100 GW potential by 2030 would require annual additions of roughly 2 GW, a sharp increase from the current levels. Going forward, the real test for floating solar will not be how many projects are announced, but how quickly these can move from site identification to commissioning, under a standardised and reliable national framework.

Transmission Upgrade: Costa Rica undertakes grid expansion to accommodate renewables

Costa Rica’s electricity sector is undergoing a grid-centric transformation driven by the need for deeper renewable energy integration, enhancing grid stability against climate variability, and supporting rapid electrification of transport and industry. To expand and modernise the national grid to support integration of new generation and handle the new demand pressures, ICE has earmarked USD1 billion between 2025 and 2034 under its latest transmission plan, Plan de Expansion de la Transmision (PET) or Transmission Expansion Plan 2024-34.

California is Lagging on Wind Development. Why?

As California’s solar industry flourished, California’s wind industry has languished. California’s goal of adding 5.2-10.3 GW of new wind by 2030 and 22.5-25.5 GW of new wind by 2045 will be difficult to attain at the rate things are going. The first step will be to get early development activity going again both for in-state and out-of-state wind projects beyond the current pipeline. To do that, the state may need to identify and reduce barriers to in-state wind development and initiate the process to build more transmission lines that enable both in-state and out-of-state wind projects.

Germany and Italy lead BESS installations in the EU

In 2025, battery storage deployment reached a new record high of 27.1 GWh, a 45% increase compared to 2024. This marks a significant acceleration after growth slowed to 23% in 2024 as a result of fundamental shifts in market and policy dynamics. As anticipated, several challenges persisted in 2025, enabling higher annual growth rates but still below 2023 levels of 73%, alongside a completely different market composition. These rapid shifts show how quickly policy and market conditions can influence battery installation levels. In 2025, Germany and Italy kept their top positions as leading BESS markets.

Scaling Biomethane in Europe: Report

European biogas and biomethane production has experienced robust growth but remains dependent on policy support. Production increased by 34 per cent between 2015 and 2024, reaching 232 TWh or 22 Bcm, with Europe now accounting for nearly half of all global output. However, biomethane continues to face a persistent cost disadvantage relative to natural gas, with limited evidence of production cost reductions since the 2010s. The EU is unlikely to meet the REPowerEU biomethane ambition, signalling a subtle recalibration of gas decarbonisation expectations.

Navigating Energy Transition in Brazil, Indonesia and South Africa: Briefing

Brazil, Indonesia, and South Africa diverge in important ways: Brazil is a net crude oil exporter with a commodity-dependent growth model; Indonesia relies heavily on domestically produced coal but remains a major importer of oil products; and South Africa is a net importer of most fossil fuels and faces a protracted electricity crisis driven by the decline of its coal-based utility system. This briefing provides a snapshot of political economy insights relating to dynamics around energy security in Brazil, Indonesia, and South Africa.
