The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group has approved a financing package of up to $110 million for the Aysha wind project in Ethiopia. The financing comprises $80 million from the ADB window, $20 million from the Clean Technology Fund, and $10 million from the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa. An additional $381.1 million in debt will be provided from other development finance institutions for the project.
Furthermore, the project is valued at $508 million, and is being developed by AMEA Power. The project will include a 300 MW wind farm, a 5-km transmission line, and upgrades to the Aysha II substation. Under a 25-year power purchase agreement, Ethiopian Electric Power will serve as the sole off-taker for the project and will own the completed transmission line. The project is also expected to generate around 1,189 GWh of clean electricity annually.
In April 2026, AfDB approved a $5.65 million reimbursable grant from the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa to pilot the Peace Renewable Energy Certificate (P-REC) Aggregation Facility. The initiative will use renewable energy certificates as a primary financing mechanism to support a portfolio of mini-grid projects across Africa.
