ABO Wind AG, a German renewables developer has announced that it has divested the rights to a 100 MW solar power project in South Africa which is the last portion of a bigger cluster in the country’s North-West region. The value of the transaction and the name of the buyer have not been revealed. The 100 MW solar park will be built on 450 acres of privately owned property and operated under a PPA that the project’s new proprietor has signed with an unidentified off-taker.

Reportedly, the project has received all necessary clearances and is now prepared for construction. The unloaded project is one of three photovoltaic (PV) projects that collectively make up a 300-MW cluster. Furthermore, two of these PV projects were transferred by ABO last autumn to a local solar energy producer called Sola Group, and they will both be used to power mines and smelters that belong to the manufacturer of titanium products called Tronox Mineral Sands.

In May 2023, Rolls-Royce Holdings and German renewables developer ABO Wind completed a crossbreed solar and battery nuclear power facility in Bavaria, Germany, capable of producing 10,000 MWh per year. In addition to avoiding about 6,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide, the generation will meet the needs of about 3,000 three-person homes.

REGlobal’s Views: ABO has a strong presence in South Africa with more than 4 GW of renewable power projects in pipeline. The company is planning on further expanding its share in the South African market and this sale is a part of that strategy. Further, the company is also setting up projects in the battery and hydrogen spaces. Acquisitions are gaining traction in South Africa where quality under development renewable energy projects fetch good worth in the market.
