ACCIONA Energía, a Spanish company, has signed a MoU with Aruba for setting up a green hydrogen valley on the island. ACCIONA Energía will work with the state-owned energy entities of Aruba in order to set up, establish, and operate a green hydrogen facility, which will be powered by a self-consumption clean energy project.
Furthermore, ACCIONA will also support Aruba entities in the installation of the required infrastructure to create renewable hydrogen space and explore other uses of green hydrogen, along with export prospects. The power generated from the plant will be utilised for producing green hydrogen while internally utilising the surplus energy to decrease the dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Moreover, the project will utilise the land presently owned by state-owned refinery, Refineria di Aruba N.V. Meanwhile, WEB Aruba and Elmar will supply water and manage transmission across the network, along with power distribution, respectively. The Aruba government and its energy entities intend to strengthen their commitment to energy independence through this groundbreaking initiative.
In June 2023, ACCIONA expanded its existing power purchase agreement with Amazon. The clean energy output from ACCIONA’s subsidiary, ACCIONA Energía, will rise from 641 MW to 833 MW with the addition of 192 MW.
REGlobal’s Views: This green hydrogen ecosystem will help the island nation of Aruba to transform its industries and decarbonise its energy mix. Such green hydrogen systems are expected to gain traction as green hydrogen gains commercial viability and this project will set an example for other projects especially in island nations.
