ACWA Power has signed three power purchase and investment agreements in Uzbekistan for the development of 1.4 GW of solar and 1.5 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS). The Saudi energy company inked the agreement with Uzbekistan’s National Electric Grid (NEGU) and the Ministry of Investment, Industry, and Trade. The business intends to construct three PV solar projects in Tashkent and Samarkand, as well as three BESS facilities in Tashkent, Bukhara, and Samarkand.
ACWA Power proposes to build a 400 MW solar PV plant and a 500 MWh BESS facility in the Tashkent region, as well as two 500 MW PV projects and a 500 MWh BESS project in Samarkand. Moreover, the company will construct a 500 MWh BESS facility near Bukhara. In addition, the project will involve the construction of overhead transmission lines that will supply energy to the grid. ACWA Power has committed $7.5 billion on these projects.
Earlier this month, ACWA Power agreed to construct a 1 GW wind and battery storage project in Kazakhstan. The company inked a project deal with the Kazakhstan government and the country’s sovereign wealth fund, Samruk-Kazyna.
REGlobal’s Views: Uzbekistan is an important market for ACWA Power and the company already has five ongoing projects in the country, including four wind projects. The addition of battery storage projects will help establish the company as a market leader in the country’s clean energy space.
