The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) will provide $20 million in reimbursable grants to support four green hydrogen and derivatives projects located across Egypt, Morocco, Namibia and South Africa. The funding, subject to Board approval, will be provided through the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA). The projects cover sustainable marine and aviation fuels in Egypt, Morocco and Namibia, and low-carbon iron in South Africa.
Furthermore, the projects include Project Ra in Egypt ($3.55 million), Guelmim Green Hydrogen Valley in Morocco ($5.28 million), Hyphen in Namibia ($5.93 million) and Saldanha Hydrogen DRI in South Africa ($5.24 million). Together, they represent an estimated $23 billion investment and include 20 GW of solar and wind capacity along with 7 GW of electrolyser and 2,950 MWh of battery storage capacities.
In July 2026, the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group approved a €100 million loan to Gotion Power Morocco for the development of an integrated cathode-to-cell lithium iron phosphate battery factory. The facility will be located in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra Free Trade Zone. Phase 1 of the project will deliver 10 GWh of battery cell and pack production capacity, with plans to expand to 100 GWh.
