Apatura has secured planning consent from the Scottish government’s Energy Consents Unit. The approval is to build a new grid scale battery energy storage system (BESS). The storage system will have a capacity of 560 MW/1120 MWh and will be situated in Scotland.
The system will connect to the Windyhill substation and Drumchapel substation through an underground cable. Further, with this approval, the company now has secured permission to build a combined total of over 2.1 GW in electricity storage capacity across central Scotland.
Earlier in May 2025, Apatura secured planning permission from Scottish government’s Energy Consents Unit. The permission was for a new 100 MW BESS project near the town of Kilwinning in North Ayrshire. The project is anticipated to generate direct employment during its construction and operation phases.
