Avangrid has achieved commercial operations of the True North Solar project. This is a 238 MW solar project situated in Texas, US. The solar project will deliver energy to the Texas Grid. It will also support Meta’s operations, including its upcoming data center facility in Texas.
Furthermore, the True North Solar project represents a $369 million investment in central Texas. It has created approximately 300 jobs for people in the region. Additionally, the project will contribute $40 million in property taxes throughout its lifetime. Avangrid partnered with ARRAY Technologies to procure solar trackers for the project.
Earlier in December 2024, Avangrid, along with Portland General Electric (PGE), inked a power purchase agreement for the development of Tower Solar, a 120 MWac under-construction solar project in Morrow County, Oregon, in collaboration with QTS and Meta. This utility-scale solar facility will deliver clean energy to PGE’s Green Future Impact GFI program.
REGlobal’s Views: This announcement comes soon after Meta’s recent deal with Zelestra for four new Environmental Attribute Purchase Agreements. Prior to that, Meta inked a long-term PPA with Longroad Energy for the entire output produced by the solar project 1000 Mile. Meta has been expanding its renewable energy procurement in the US, and Texas is an important state in this regard, as the company has a goal to meet its electricity usage with 100% renewable energy.
