Azelio, a public Swedish company specialising in thermal energy storage with dispatchable power, has signed an agreement with ALEC Energy to build a renewable energy storage site. Azelio will install a verification project in Abu Dhabi so as to evaluate its energy storage technology for inclusion in Masdar’s renewable energy product portfolio. The installation will happen in the third quarter of the year 2020, together with Masdar and Khalifa University.

ALEC Energy is a related business division of ALEC Engineering and Contracting L.L.C., that offers a complete turnkey solution for both rooftop and ground mounted Solar PV Plants. The agreement signed with ALEC Energy, to prepare and set up the installation site, is an important milestone for the storage project. ALEC Energy and Azelio recently signed an MoU for a collaboration of installing over 49 MW of the latter’s energy storage until 2025. The said thermal storage technology stores energy in recycled aluminium and can produce electricity and heat from the storage on demand at all hours of the day. Azelio currently has installations in Morocco and Sweden.

The energy storage installation is being set up in Masdar City, which is a planned city project in Abu Dhabi. The project is led by Masdar, with the majority of seed capital provided by the Government of Abu Dhabi. The city strongly relies on solar energy and other renewable energy sources for meeting its energy needs.
