BadaEnergy, a joint venture of Corio Generation, TotalEnergies and SK ecoplant, has selected Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) as the preferred bidder for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of its Ulsan Gray Whale 3 floating offshore wind farm in South Korea. The Ulsan floating offshore wind projects (project name: Gray Whale 1,2,3) intend to construct 1.5 GW in public waters.
The project will be located 60–70 km offshore the port of Ulsan. Furthermore, HHI is cooperating in a task force with the BadaEnergy team and Vestas to continue optimising design and industrialising the execution plan for the manufacture of the 33 hulls, turbine integration, and site installation.
Reportedly, BadaEnergy chose HHI and Doris Engineering consortium to provide front-end engineering design solutions including services for floating, mooring and inter-array cables in August 2022. The construction of the phases is anticipated to commence in 2025 meanwhile the first commercial operations are scheduled to start in 2028. Additionally, BadaEnergy will be able to quickly put its approach of localising all stages of offshore wind projects into action.
Earlier this month HD Hyundai Electric, Pacifico Energy Korea, CS Wind, Korea Ocean Engineering & Consultants, and Daebul Shipbuilding signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a 3.2 GW offshore wind project off the coast of Jindo County in South Jeolla Province. In order to effectively finish the project, the companies also committed to strengthening the system of cooperation under the MoU.
