BW ESS has started commercial operations of the first phase of its Hams Hall battery energy storage system (BESS) in the West Midlands, UK. The first phase has a capacity of 350 MW/1,243 MWh, making it the largest BESS in Europe by storage capacity. The project is located next to National Grid’s Hams Hall substation.
Furthermore, the second phase will increase the total capacity of Hams Hall to 400 MW/1,424 MWh. BW ESS worked with Sungrow, Energy-IO, National Grid, and NESO during commissioning, testing, and preparation for operations.
Earlier, in September 2026, BW ESS acquired two standalone BESS projects from Navacant in Spain. The projects, located in the Valencia region, have storage capacities of 99 MW and 27 MW, respectively. Together, the projects have a combined capacity of 126 MW/up to 675 MWh.
