Cargill is expanding its renewable electricity portfolio in the US through solar and wind projects in Oklahoma and South Dakota. It has signed a 12.6-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) for 87 MW of wind power from the Sweetland wind project in South Dakota. The project is expected to generate about 392,000 MWh of renewable electricity annually and support a reduction of around 162,000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions each year from Cargill’s operations.
Furthermore, Cargill previously signed a long-term VPPA for the full output of the 85 MW Choctaw Fields solar project in Oklahoma. The project started commercial operations in August 2026 and is expected to reduce around 86,000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions over the agreement period. Both projects are located within the Southwest Power Pool. Together, they are expected to support approximately 3.3 million metric tonnes of emissions reductions over their contract period.
Cargill’s renewable electricity portfolio includes six VPPAs in North America and more than 100 projects across 30 countries. The company is continuing to expand its renewable electricity portfolio in areas where it operates, as part of its goal to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions by 25 per cent by 2035, compared with its 2020 baseline.
