NIWE and ORE Catapult partner for offshore wind development in India

The National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) of India and ORE Catapult of the UK have signed a joint declaration of intent under which the two wind energy organisations of their respective countries will establish a five-year collaboration programme for the development of wind energy, particularly offshore wind. India currently has no offshore wind facilities, and plans to start development in this space by 2024-25 are also well behind schedule.

SIMEC Atlantis commissions pilot tidal project in Japan

SIMEC Atlantis Energy Ltd (SAE) has installed its demo tidal turbine and generation equipment in Japanese waters near the Goto Island chain. The pilot turbine has generated 10 MWh in its first 10 days of operation. Supply and installation of the turbine were provided under a contract to a Japanese company Kyuden Mirai Energy (KME).

IBFM partners with Engie to develop renewable wood pellet plants in Asia

International Bio Fuels Marketing (IBFM) has announced a partnership with Engie for the development of four wood pellet plants in Asia with construction starting this year. The joint venture begin construction of the first plant in Vietnam in September. Work on a second plant is scheduled to begin in early 2022 and the development of two additional plants in Malaysia will begin later next year. The cost of each plant is estimated to be $12 million and will take 12 months to build. Each plant will be equipped to produce 70,000 tonnes of wood pellets a year.

DFC and Shell Foundation partner to improve renewable energy uptake in low-income communities in Africa and Asia

The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and Shell Foundation (the UK-registered charity) have announced a new collaboration that will promote renewable energy uptake in low-income areas of Africa and Asia. The collaboration aims to improve gender inclusion and to bring affordable renewable energy to more than 5 million people in these regions.

BayWa r.e. sells Isohara solar farm to D&D Solar GK

BayWa r.e. has announced the successful sale of its Isohara solar farm in Japan to D&D Solar GK, a new venture set up between Osaka Gas and the Development Bank of Japan. The sale of the 35 MWp site in Kita-Ibaraki City follows the sale of the 11.9 MWp Izumi solar farm in December 2020 to D&D Solar GK as well. It will produce enough electricity to meet the average annual consumption of 15,000 households in Japan.

ADB and Japan enhance their joint efforts to promote clean energy in ASEAN Region

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) have signed a memorandum of cooperation (MOC) for clean energy promotion in South-East Asia. EDEN Renewables India gets $165 million loan for its 450 MWp solar PV project

EDEN Renewables India, a joint venture of Total Eren and EDF Renouvelables, has successfully secured financing for its 450 MWp SECI III solar PV project. The said project has recently received a green limited recourse project term loan of $165 million from a group of three major international banks – DBS Bank Ltd, Standard Chartered Bank, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (Singapore Branch).

Bangladesh sets up a research centre and pilot project for hydrogen technologies

Bangladesh has announced that it has set up a research centre and a pilot processing plant for hydrogen-based technologies. In addition to producing hydrogen, the plant will also produce waste and biomass which will be used as feedstock. For this, the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSCIR) has kickstarted the training of scientists to work towards setting up a full-fledged Hydrogen Energy Laboratory as part of the project.

South Korea to allow C&I and residential consumers to purchase renewable energy under RE100 initiative

The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy of South Korea has announced the sanctioning of the purchase of electricity from renewable sources by industrial and general electric consumers as part of the RE100 initiative. The parties must register at the Korea Energy Agency and the electricity will be procured through self-generation, green premium system, third party power purchase agreement, or the purchase of renewable energy certificates.

SK Group and Plug Power partner to promote hydrogen-based technologies in Asia

A strategic partnership has been announced between United States-based hydrogen fuel cell provider Plug Power and the South Korean SK Group to promote hydrogen-based technologies in the Asian Market. Accordingly, SK Group will be investing $1.5 billion to acquire a 9.9 per cent pro forma ownership stake in Plug Power, thereby forming a joint venture company in South Korea. Plug SK Group’s US subsidiary will purchase around 51.4 million shares for $29.28 per share, and the transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2021.

DAI Global offers technical assistance for green energy projects in Vietnam

Development Alternatives Incorporated has invited expressions of interest (EoI) on behalf of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Vietnam Government to offer technical assistance to renewable energy developers in Vietnam. The support is being extended to offset risk costs and to encourage renewable energy developers to invest in new projects, thereby helping the country meet its energy needs. The last date to submit bids is January 16, 2021.
