Innergex Renewable Energy (Innergex) and Mi’gmawei Mawiomi Business Corporation (MMBC) have reached financial close for the construction and operation of the Mesgi’g Ugju’s’n 2 wind project in Quebec. The wind project has a capacity of 102 MW. The wind project is located in MRC d’Avignon and is an extension of the existing 150 MW Mesgi’g Ugju’s’n wind facility, which was commissioned in 2016. The project is expected to be commissioned in 2026.

ACCIONA Energía has started commercial operations at the Forty Mile wind farm. The project has a capacity of 280 MW and is situated in Alberta, Canada. Out of the total 1.25 GW on offer, approximately 500 MW will be reserved for public-led offshore wind bidding.

Equinor and Polenergia have reached financial close for the Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 offshore wind projects. The two companies are project joint venture partners with 50 per cent share each in the projects. Two financing packages of over €3 billion for Bałtyk 2 and over €3 billion for Bałtyk 3, including ancillary facilities, have been secured. The two projects have a total power capacity of 1440 MW. The projects are expected to reach full commercial power production in 2028.

Mexico’s energy security and affordability are at risk due to its high dependence on imported gas. 74% of domestic gas demand and 54% of the electricity generated in Mexico depend on gas purchased from the United States, making the country, its economy, and its citizens extremely vulnerable to potential geopolitical conflicts and price volatility. Achieving 45% clean energy by 2030 would reduce the country’s dependence on imported gas from the US for electricity generation by 20%. This growth in clean generation, based on the installation of 46 GW of solar and wind energy, would make it possible to avoid any investment in the construction of new combined-cycle power plants.

Offshore hydrogen production from offshore wind energy is gaining global attention as an appealing solution for scaling up green hydrogen production. The techno economic feasibility of integrating offshore wind into hydrogen production has been explored in various regions, but no comprehensive study exists concerning Saudi Arabia’s offshore wind potential. This work by KAPSARC aims to assess the cost-effectiveness of producing hydrogen onshore versus offshore from wind power in the Red Sea. Via the use of a deterministic cost model, this study evaluates the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) for both configurations. The results show that offshore wind farm costs and floating foundations are the major drivers of capital expenditure (CAPEX).

Advancing US Floating OWT: DOE and BOEM release transmission action plan for West Coast

The US West Coast offshore wind (OSW) sector received a policy roadmap in the form of a transmission action plan, just days before the new administration paused new leasing activity in federal waters. The US Department of Energy (DOE) and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) released the “Action Plan for Offshore Wind Transmission Development in the US West Coast Region” on January 16, 2025. However, on January 20, 2025, the new administration ordered the temporary withdrawal of all areas on the outer continental shelf from OSW leasing pending a review of the leasing and permitting practices for wind projects. While this creates uncertainty in the short- to medium-term, particularly on the West Coast where OSW is yet to take off due to deep waters off the Pacific Coast requiring floating OSW technology, the region could potentially host substantial floating OSW capacity in the long term.
