MingYang Smart Energy, a Chinese turbine manufacturer, has been awarded a supply contract by PowerChina International Group for the 375 MW Ca Mau offshore wind project in Vietnam. The project is located in the Sanjiang Dongshe tidal flat area of Nangen County, Ca Mau Province and MingYang will supply 75 of its MySE 5.0-166 offshore wind turbines for the Ca Mau 1 project. The said project will be developed in two stages, the first of which will be delivered in the first quarter of 2022.
MingYang Smart Energy’s MySE 16.0-242 is a 16MW, 242m-tall turbine capable of powering 20,000 houses per unit (80GWh per year) over a 25-year life cycle. Three 118m propeller blades will sweep a 46,000m2 area. It will produce 45 percent more energy than the MySE 11.0-203, which it replaces.
According to a statement, the company would continue to serve around 1,000 MW of projects in the adjacent areas, and collaborate with local developers and supply chain leaders. Last year, the company announced that it had started construction of a 2 GW wind-solar-storage hybrid project near the city of Tongliao, Inner Mongolia, after it was approved by the Tongliao DRC. The project includes 1,700 MW of wind capacity, 300 MW of solar capacity and 320MW/960MWh of energy storage capacity.
REGlobal’s Views: Vietnam has a growing power demand and a high potential for offshore wind development. However, the country has many regulatory barriers that need to be addressed to continue the influx of large developers and investors in its renewable energy space.
