Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), through its Advanced Bioenergy Fund I (ABF I), has reached the final investment decision (FID) for the Cobirgy biogas plant located in Catalonia, Spain. The project will produce over 230 GWh of biomethane annually and around 150,000 tonnes of organic fertiliser and soil improver products. The plant will process up to 500,000 tonnes of agricultural and industrial organic waste annually.
Furthermore, the project is backed by a CAPEX grant from the Catalonian government. The project has been joined by more than 350 local farmers, supplying over 80 per cent of the feedstock from within a 15-km radius. The project is expected to strengthen Spain’s renewable gas production, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and support the country’s energy transition.
In January 2026, Moeve and Pretium Renovables entered into an agreement to develop between four and six biomethane plants in Spain. Each plant is planned with an estimated annual production capacity of 60 GWh. The projects are expected to be rolled out across multiple regions, with Andalusia identified as the priority area for initial development. Each biomethane plant is projected to offset 14,600 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
