CPS Energy, a San Antonio’s municipally-owned utility, has released proposals to seek contracts for up to 500 MW of energy storage projects as part of a latest approved plan to reinforce its power generation. Reportedly, the company issued a request for proposals (RfP) this week and is awaiting proposals for both large scale and smaller sized schemes.
Furthermore, the utility estimated that the power discharged from the contracted energy storage facilities will be sufficient to supply around 100,000 homes. This RfP is the first that CPS has issued for initiatives involving independent battery energy storage. Submissions will be received by October 18 and CPS Energy aims to make selections by the end of the year.
CPS Energy aims to install these storage at various strategic locations within its service area to improve the power reliability in certain specific areas. Storage solutions will help CPS Energy to quickly respond to changes in customer demand or grid conditions.
REGlobal’s Views: The utility’s board of trustees had approved its power generation plan earlier this year and the CPS Energy has been focusing on increasing its renewable energy generation capacity as part of the same. This is the third RfP by the utility within this year after those for 700 MW for solar and 50 MW of community solar.
