Oman intends to construct hydrogen pipelines across the country to help the Sultanate’s green hydrogen targets. The network is scheduled to have 2,000 km of pipelines which will initially supply green hydrogen to three industrial zones which are Duqm, Al-Jazir and Salalah, and is being built by Hydrom.
Furthermore, the first stage is anticipated to connect Duqm and Al-Jazir with Salalah in the south joining later. In the final phase the network will reach the capital Muscat in the north by 2050. Reportedly, the proposed network will serve the Sultanate’s strategy under which it intends to produce between 1 million and 1.25 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030 which will be partially used to meet demand in the local market.
In July 2023, ACME Group secured funding of Rs 40 billion for its green hydrogen and green ammonia project in Oman from REC Limited. The funds raised from REC Limited were used to build the facility’s first phase, to be established at the special economic zone in Duqm, Oman.
REGlobal’s Views: Oman is expected to have a significant number of large green hydrogen projects come up in the future owing to land and ample renewable energy resource availability as well as its proximity to ports and important sea routes. Thus, this step to build pipelines, as ready infrastructure for hydrogen transport, will help the country to secure more investments in this space.
