US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced nearly $2 billion in funding for 38 projects aimed at strengthening the nation’s power grid. The projects, under the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) program, will introduce advanced transmission and distribution infrastructure and technological upgrades to support over 7.5 GW of grid capacity.
This initiative is expected to expedite the connection of clean energy projects, create approximately 6,000 well-paying jobs, and leverage over $4.2 billion in public and private investment to ensure reliable, affordable, and clean energy access across US. These efforts extend to 42 states and the District of Columbia, including six key projects in the southeast targeting areas impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
The selected projects will modernise more than 950 miles of transmission infrastructure, including the construction of over 300 miles of new transmission lines and the enhancement of 650 miles of existing lines with grid-enhancing technologies. These upgrades aim to increase the capacity of the current transmission network, thereby reinforcing the grid’s ability to deliver clean energy and support the country’s climate goals.
