EDF Renewables UK is poised to deploy over 300 MW of battery storage to enhance the UK’s grid decarbonisation efforts. The company has six projects under construction, with plans to activate them within the next 12 months. This includes a 57 MW battery in Braintree, Essex, and a 47.5 MW battery in Indian Queens, Saint Austell. Recently, a 52 MW battery in Sundon, Bedfordshire, was energised in mid-July, and last week, Dorset Council approved plans for a 47.5 MW battery near Mannington in Dorset.
The total 313 MW of battery storage has the potential to supply power for approximately two hours to over 400,000 homes. The new UK Government has set an ambitious target for a zero-carbon electricity system by 2030, necessitating a substantial increase in renewable capacity. This includes tripling solar capacity to 50 GW, quadrupling offshore wind to 55 GW, and doubling onshore wind to 35 GW by the decade’s end.
In July 2024, EDF Renewables and Repsol signed an exclusivity agreement to collaborate on future offshore wind tenders in Spain and Portugal. This strategic partnership aims to leverage the substantial growth opportunities available in the Iberian Peninsula’s offshore wind sector.
