Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), Mozambique’s state-owned power company, has invited bids from consultancy firms to conduct feasibility studies for the development of a floating solar project in the Chicamba dam in the Manica province of Mozambique. The scope of work comprises preparing a technical and financial feasibility report for a floating solar project.

As per the guidelines, the report should also include an assessment of the environmental impact of the project infrastructure and interconnection lines on the dam and marine ecosystem, as well as the proposed floating solar project’s socioeconomic aspects. Further, the company has applied for financing from the African Development Bank to cover the cost of feasibility studies for the floating solar project. The successful bidder must complete the feasibility study within 14 months of receiving the award letter. The bid submission deadline is January 28, 2022.

In December 2021, Globeleq, a leading independent power company in Africa and its project partners, Source Energia, an African energy developer and EDM, the Mozambican national power utility, reached financial close on the 15 MWAC Cuamba Solar PV facility with a 7 MWh energy storage system. The $36 million project would produce electricity through a 25 year power purchase agreement with EDM in the Cuamba district of Niassa province which is approximately 550 km west of the seaside town of Nacala. The project is expected to become operational in the second half of 2022.
