The Electricity Supply Board (ESB) and Bord na Móna (BnM) have launched the Timahoe North solar farm in Co Kildare, Ireland. The project has an installed capacity of 108 MWp and has been fully operational since early 2025. The project has been executed with the involvement of contractors and subcontractors like Voltalia, H&MV Engineering, S&G Solar Ltd., and Wills Bros Group.
The project is expected to supply enough renewable energy to power around 25,000 homes. Additionally, as part of the project, a Community Benefit Fund has been established. The fund will be directed towards supporting the well-being of the local community surrounding the Timahoe North site. This is the first large-scale solar project delivered under the broader joint venture between the two companies, which aims to deliver up to 500 MW of solar capacity on BnM-owned land across the Midlands region.
In July 2025, Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) offshore wind farm, co-owned by EDF power solutions UK and Ireland and ESB became fully operational. The wind farm is located 15.5km off the coast of Fife and has 54 wind turbines to generate 450 MW of power. Further, in June 2025, ESB partnered with DP Energy to develop the Lyrwa wind farm in Co Mayo, Ireland. The wind farm has an installed capacity of 100 MW and is expected to supply clean energy to around 70,914 homes annually.
REGlobal’s Views: Ireland has been focusing on increasing its renewable energy penetration and the country sourced 40% of its electricity supply from renewable sources last year. More large utility-scale and distributed renewable energy projects are coming up in solar as well as onshore and offshore wind to supply power to homes as well as businesses.
