The Yunlin offshore wind farm of the Yunneng Wind Power Co. Ltd. has started commercial operations with an installed capacity of 640 MW. The project comprises 80 wind turbine generators. It is located in the Taiwan Strait, 8 to 17 km off the west coast, across a project area of 82 square km with water depths ranging from 7 to 35 metres. The wind farm has obtained the required electricity business licences, complied with regulatory requirements, and met contractual obligations under its financing agreement.
Yunneng Wind Power Co. Ltd. is a joint venture between Skyborn, TotalEnergies, the Electricity Generating Public Company Limited (EGCO Group), and Sojitz Corporation. Power generated from the wind farm is delivered to Taiwan Power Company through two 20-year power purchase agreements. Electricity is transmitted to the grid via two onshore substations situated near Taixi and Sihu townships in Yunlin County.
With the beginning of commercial operations, TotalEnergies will now take charge of technical operations management, while Skyborn Renewables continues to provide broader management services. Furthermore, the project achieved full grid connection in January 2025 and is expected to supply 2,400 GWh of electricity annually. It is also projected to reduce carbon emissions by nearly 1.2 million tonnes per year.
REGlobal’s Views: Taiwan has set a target of 15 GW of offshore wind to be constructed between 2026 and 2035. It has a large pipeline of offshore wind projects being developed by leading energy giants from across the globe. The country is witnessing a significant influx of investments in this space, aided by an enabling policy regime and long-term power purchase agreements.
