Germany’s Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) has given a planning approval to Ørsted for the 242 MW Gode Wind 3 offshore wind farm. With this approval, the project completes all the green lights for beginning its construction phase.
The Gode Wind 3 project is planned to be located nearly 32km from the island of Norderney in Cluster 3 within the German North Sea exclusive economic zone. The wind farm will consist of 23 Siemens Gamesa turbines having a nominal output of 11 MW and a rotor diameter of 200 metres.
Originally, Ørsted was awarded the projects in the offshore wind auctions of the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) in 2017 and 2018 as Gode Wind 3 and 4. The two project companies were later merged under the name Gode Wind 3 in 2019. Ørsted has already completed the construction of Gode Wind 1 and 2 wind farms which began operating at the end of 2016.
The development of the Gode Wind 3 is expected to be done simultaneously with the 900 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 project. The project is expected to begin operation in 2024, while the Borkum RIffgrund 3 is expected to be launched in 2025. The Borkum Riffgrund 3 project will be located nearly 53km off the coast of Borkum Island, Germany. The Ørsted wind farms Borkum Riffgrund 1 and 2 are located in the Borkum cluster, where Borkum Riffgrund 3 is also to be built. It is expected to generate enough electricity to power 920,000 German homes, and avoid up to three million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
