ITOCHU Corporation has partnered with Kanadevia Inova and Nareva for an integrated waste-to-energy (WtE) project in Casablanca, Morocco. The consortium has signed a 33.5-year concession agreement with the Casablanca Municipality, along with power purchase agreements with Morocco’s National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) and SRM Casablanca-Settat. Furthermore, the project will process 1.5 million tonnes of municipal solid waste annually.
The project will feature a 115 MW waste-to-energy plant, a 4 MW biogas power plant using landfill methane, and a 50 MW solar power plant developed on surplus land created through waste diversion. Additionally, the project includes the operation, closure and management of the existing Mediouna landfill, along with the development of new landfill facilities. Over the concession period, the project is expected to avoid up to 128 million tonnes of carbon emissions. ITOCHU will invest in the project through its UK subsidiary, I-Environment Investments Ltd.
In June 2026, ITOCHU Corporation, Mitsubishi Estate and Tokyo Century Corporation partnered on a utility-scale battery energy storage project in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. The project has an installed capacity of 67 MW/230.1 MWh. The project is expected to commence operations in 2027 and has a storage capacity equivalent to the daily electricity consumption of around 20,000 households.
