The government of Morocco has approved $ 32.7 billion worth of green hydrogen projects for the production of ammonia, industrial fuel, and green steel. Under this, five groups of national and international investors were selected to carry out six projects across the three southern regions of Morocco. The government of Morocco will reportedly offer each project up to 30,000 hectares of land.

These groups include:

  • Ornx consisting of the companies Ortus, Acciona, and Nordex, which will invest in the production of ammonia
  • TAQA and Cepsa will produce ammonia and synthetic fuel
  • Morocco-based company Nareva will produce ammonia, synthetic fuel and green steel
  • Saudi Arabian company ACWA Power will invest in the production of green steel
  • Chinese companies UEG and China Three Gorges will also produce ammonia.

Morocco’s green hydrogen sector is rapidly expanding. Earlier in October 2024, the Moroccan government and TE H2, alongside its partners, inked a Preliminary Contract for Land Reservation for the ‘Chbika’ project. TE H2 is a joint venture between TotalEnergies and the EREN Group.

REGlobal’s Views: Morocco has a huge renewable energy potential, ample land and is close to demand centers in Europe, making it an ideal destination for green hydrogen production. The country can expect many large green hydrogen projects to come up in the near future.
