The Queensland government has announced that green hydrogen will be produced on the Darling Downs in less than two years. This will be made possible through a unique demonstration facility capable of producing an estimated 50,000 kilogrammes of solar-powered renewable hydrogen per year, which is expected to be operational by the end of 2023. This Kogan Hydrogen Demonstration Plant will be created by state-owned generator CS Energy following a successful feasibility assessment by Japanese industrial giant IHI Corporation Japan.
Further, a solar farm, battery energy storage system, hydrogen electrolyser, and hydrogen fuel cell would all be co-located at the plant, which would be erected beside the current Kogan Creek Power Station. The Kogan Creek project is expected to start construction in 2022, with commissioning in early 2023. As per a company statement, the Kogan Creek project provides a chance for CS Energy to make its claim in the hydrogen sector and increase Queenslanders’ ownership of sustainable energy assets.
Earlier this month, New Horizons Ahead (NHOA), previously known as Engie EPS, was awarded a 200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Australia. According to a company statement, the project’s building phase would begin immediately at an as-yet-undisclosed location for an unnamed customer, with completion expected by the end of 2022. Furthermore, an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) counterparty contract has already been signed at the beginning of October 2021.
