RWE, a German energy company, has selected Port of Thorsminde to conduct the operation and maintenance (O&M) on its Thor offshore wind farm. Under the agreement, RWE has signed a letter of intent with the Port of Thorsminde to use the port for the next 30 years. RWE stated that the port provides the shortest sea and air approaches to the Thor offshore wind farm. From 2026 onwards, the new service station is expected to be operational.
The Thor offshore wind farm, with a planned capacity of 1 GW, will be erected off the coast of Denmark. The project, located roughly 22 km from the port of Thorsminde, will be able to generate clean energy for more than one million Danish households. By 2027, the wind farm is projected to be fully operational. In the long run, the initiative is planned to create up to 60 long term jobs for technicians, engineers, nautical personnel, and crew for the service vessels.
In March 2022, in an onshore wind power infrastructure auction, the German Federal Network Agency awarded RWE two onshore wind projects. The Grevenbroich wind farm in North Rhine-Westphalia with a total installed capacity of 45 MW, and the Bartelsdorf 2 project in Lower Saxony.
