RWE AG, a German energy group, has begun building a portfolio of seven solar projects totaling 330 MW in the UK, along with energy storage capacity. JBM Solar, a British solar developer that RWE acquired in 2023, has these initiatives in the works as part of its goal to rank among the country’s leading solar developers.

The projects have already obtained Contracts for Difference (CFD), with capacities ranging from 35 MW to 50 MW. A battery energy storage system (BESS) is already planned for two of them, while the other two are made to allow future co-location.By the end of 2024, the first site is anticipated to be switched on, and the others soon after. When the facilities are fully operational, they will produce enough electricity to power more than 140,000 typical UK homes.

The projects are called Langford, Claydon, Cotmoor, Moreton Lane, Doverdale, Stoneshollow, and Ashorne, and they are spread throughout England, from north Devon to Lincolnshire. In addition to 35 MW of BESS, Langford’s solar capacity is 35 MW, and the 45 MW Claydon plant contains 10 MW of storage. Each of the remaining locations has 50 MW of solar power. The engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract has been awarded to UK-based Ethical Power as well as Equans UK & Ireland, which will operate under the new brand Equans Solar & Storage. Up to 2030, RWE intends to commission 450 MW of new solar power annually, on average, in the UK.
