Statera Energy has acquired a 680 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project at Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park in Greater Manchester. The project is known as Carrington Storage and is expected to be fully energised in 2026. The project will be over twice the size of Statera’s upcoming 300 MW Thurrock Storage project.

Statera Energy is rapidly expanding its BESS fleet in the UK market through large project announcements. Carrington Storage will reportedly account for nearly a quarter of the installed energy capacity of the UK’s operational BESS fleet. The project is designed to operate in conjunction with long-duration energy storage and other flexible technologies.

Earlier in November 2024, Statera Energy secured up to £300 million of debt financing through a syndicate led by Lloyds Bank. The first £144 million phase of the financing was used to deliver Statera’s 300 MW (600 MWh) Thurrock Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Furthermore, the balance of the financing will fund the development of a 270 MW flexible generation plant which secured a capacity market contract early in 2023.

REGlobal’s Views: With UK’s decision to end coal-fired generation and its expanding energy storage market, a series of energy storage projects have been announced in the country, that will help in providing grid stabilityCompanies like Statera Energy, SSE Renewables, EDF, and The Renewables Infrastructure Group have already announced multiple large energy storage projects across the country to cater to increasing penetration of renewables.
