Australian and Japanese companies study the potential of deep-sea carbon capture

Australian and Japanese companies are exploring the potential of capturing carbon dioxide from industries in Asia and storing it off the coast of Australia, on the ocean floor. Australian company, Transborders Energy Pty is leading the ‘deepC store project’ along with its partners which include Tokyo Gas Co. and Kyushu Electric Power Co. The team is exploring the possibility of shipping emissions across the Asia-Pacific region using a floating hub to inject the material under the seabed.

How Australia’s vast resources could make it a green energy superpower

For Australia’s renewable energy sector, there is a renewed sense of optimism. Last year, Australia was deploying new renewables 10 times faster per capita than the global average, and four times faster per capita than in Europe, China, Japan or the US. Another sign of Australia’s ambition to lead the renewables revolution is the more than 10GW of roof-mounted solar PV deployed, by far the largest per capita rooftop-PV deployment in the world.

No country can come near 100% renewables without hydropower: International Hydropower Association’s Roger Gill

The world has about 160 GW of pumped storage installed capacity at the moment – storing at least 9,000 GWh of electricity. Indeed over 94 per cent of the world’s entire energy storage is pumped hydro. We need to double this capacity: that’s another 160 GW. But if the market structures are ill defined, investors won’t fund these projects.
