India announces strategy for offshore wind development

On August 17, 2023, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) released a revised strategy for the development of offshore wind energy projects in India. The policy provides a framework for offshore wind power development up to a seaward distance of 200 nautical miles from the country’s exclusive economic zone. Based on a multi-criteria ap­p­roach that involved the assessment of various parameters such as wind resource and bathymetry, the consortium identified eight zones each off the coasts of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu as potential offshore wind energy zones.

Eolus offloads 125 MW Swedish wind projects to BKW

Eolus, a Swedish renewables developer, has divested three Swedish wind projects totaling 125 MW to Swiss power provider BKW. Skallberget/Utterberget, Tjärnäs and Rosenskog are under construction and will begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2023. The three projects are powered by 19 wind turbines and will generate 330 GWh of clean energy annually. The deal includes all the shares at an enterprise value of €189 million, along with €19 million in the share purchase price.

Enefit Green awards Nordex Group order for 255 MW in Estonia

Nordex Group, a German wind turbine manufacturer, has received a turbine order from Enefit Green for a 255 MW onshore wind cluster in Estonia. As part of the agreement, Nordex will provide 38 of its N163/6.X wind turbines to the Tootsi, Sopi I, and Sopi II wind farms.  Sopi I, Sopi II, and Tootsi will be built in Nord Pärnu, forming the most powerful wind project cluster in the Baltic states to date.

Baltic Power is being built by a partnership between PKN ORLEN and Northland Power. Vestas will deliver 76 of its V236-15.0 MW turbines for the wind project, which is located 23 km from the Polish Baltic Sea coastline.

Nordex Group, a German wind turbine manufacturer, has won a wind turbine supply contract from a partnership that includes Helen, a Finnish energy utility, and the landsbanken Wind Power Fund. For the 147.5 MW Karahka wind farm, Nordex will deliver and install 25 of its N163/5.X turbines. The Karahka wind facility will be developed in the north of Oulainen, a town in Finland’s North Ostrobothnia region.

Siemens Gamesa, a Spanish energy company, has been awarded a contract to supply 60 wind turbine units for the 882 MW Moray West offshore wind power project in Scotland. According to the agreement, the company will deliver its SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbines, each having a capacity of 14.7MW. Each SG 14-222 DD turbine will have a 222 metre rotor diameter and use Siemens Gamesa’s 108 metre-long IntegralBlades.

Vattenfall, Sweden’s state-owned power company, is set to open its Blakliden Fäbodberget onshore wind farm in the municipalities of Sele and Lycksele. Vattenfall owns a 30 per cent stake in the 353 MW wind farm, which is jointly owned by Vattenfall, Vestas, and AIP Management. The facility is equipped with 84 wind turbines and has the capacity to generate 1 tWh of clean energy, enough to power almost 220,000 homes in the area.

China’s transition to a subsidy-free market in 2021 resulted in 34% less capacity installed in the country YoY (-24 GW), which heavily impacted the global total. However, the nearly 48 GW installed in China in 2021 indicates that strong market fundamentals remain despite the shift in policy. If we exclude China, the rest of the world added more than 47 GW of new capacity, a 14% increase YoY, driven primarily by significant growth in Asia Pacific (+134%), Northern Europe (+100%), and Latin America (+82%).

ORIT to acquire stake in 270 MW offshore wind farm in UK

Octopus Renewables Infrastructure Trust (ORIT), a UK-based renewable investment firm, has agreed to acquire a 7.75 per cent stake in the Lincs offshore wind farm. Lincs, with a capacity of 270MW, is located offshore from England’s east coast and has been operational since 2013. The offshore wind facility, which spans 35 km sq, is equipped with 75 wind turbines, each with a 3.6MW capacity.

Envision Group, a Chinese energy company, has signed a letter of intent with Impact Energy Asia Development (IEAD) to supply wind turbines for the Monsoon Wind Project in Laos. In an onshore wind power infrastructure auction, the German Federal Network Agency awarded RWE two onshore wind projects. The Grevenbroich wind farm in North Rhine-Westphalia has a total installed capacity of 45 MW, whereas the Bartelsdorf 2 project is in Lower Saxony. The Grevenbroich wind farm will have a total installed capacity of 17.1 MW, and construction is planned to start in the second quarter of 2022.
