Unigreen Energy, a vertically integrated renewables firm located in Moscow, said today that it has begun construction on a heterojunction (HJT) gigafactory in Russia, with intentions to sell the majority of its output worldwide. It will have 1.3 GW of capacity for silicon n-type monocrystalline ingots and wafers, as well as 1 GW for HJT solar cells, when fully operational.

The EnCore facility is being built within the Chernyakhovsk industrial zone in the Kaliningrad area, on the Baltic Sea coast between Poland and Lithuania. The production is expected to begin in late 2022.

According to a statement issued by Unigreen Energy, a subsidiary of Ream Management, the bulk of the produced volumes would be sold internationally, particularly in Europe, Asia Pacific, and other areas. Focusing on cell supply rather than module supply, also allows the manufacturing organization to concentrate on technology and production concerns rather than being stretched between upstream manufacturing and downstream end-market selling.
