The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and ARCHES have inked  a $12.6 billion agreement to establish a clean, renewable Hydrogen Hub in California. This deal includes up to $1.2 billion in federal funding announced in 2023. This makes ARCHES as the first of seven national Hydrogen Hubs to finalise its agreement with the DOE.

Furthermore, the hydrogen hub will create a network of renewable hydrogen production sites aimed at reducing fossil fuel use across California. This initiative  is expected to cut up to 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions per year. The project is expected to create approximately 220,000 new jobs, including 130,000 in construction and 90,000 permanent roles. It is expected to deliver about $2.95 billion per year in health benefits and cost savings.

Moreover, the decarbonisation efforts will focus on critical areas such as three major ports, more than 5,000 fuel-cell-electric trucks, and over 1,000 fuel-cell-electric buses. Additionally, the initiative will involve one marine vessel, turbines, and stationary fuel cells. In April 2023, California applied through ARCHES, a public-private partnership, to establish the state’s renewable hydrogen hub.
