ACWA Power will collaborate with PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Indonesia’s state-owned power provider, and PT Pupuk Indonesia, a state-owned fertiliser and chemical company, to build the Garuda Hidrogen Hijau green hydrogen project in Indonesia. The declaration was made in Dubai at the COP28 side events. The CEO of Pupuk Indonesia Holding Company and the CEO of PLN signed the deal with ACWA Power.

It is anticipated that the Garuda Hidrogen Hijau green hydrogen project will start operations in 2026. It will generate 150,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually while using 600 MW of solar and wind energy. The project is expected to cost more than $1 billion. Furthermore, the project’s engineering, procurement, and construction tendering process is set to commence in the first quarter of 2024, with financial close scheduled for the end of 2025.

In November 2023, ACWA Power launched the first phase of a 3,000 tonne-per-year green hydrogen project in Uzbekistan. Reportedly, the project will be built in two phases. The first phase, a 3,000-tonne green ammonia pilot project, is already underway following the signing of the hydrogen purchase and power purchase agreements in May 2023.

REGlobal’s Views: ACWA Power is expanding its presence in many markets globally to increase its renewable power portfolio. It was awarded two floating solar projects in Indonesia last year and this latest large green hydrogen project with solar and wind capacity will help the company to emerge as a major renewable energy player in Indonesia.
