The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has invited developers to submit expressions of interest (EOIs) for a 1.5 GW solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Abu Dhabi. The Al Ajban Solar PV project would be built in the Ajban area of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The solar project will have the capacity to power nearly 160,000 homes across the UAE once it is operational, displacing more than 2.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and German development finance group, DEG have provided a $10.6 million loan in local currency to Yellow Door Energy to develop, construct and operate a portfolio of eight solar projects in Jordan. EBRD also mobilised $5 million provided by the Global Environment Facility and DEG provided senior loans worth $15.6 million for the projects, taking the total loan value to $31.2 million. The projects will have a total installed capacity of 48.3 MW and will generate 81 GWh of renewable energy per annum.

The South African government has announced plans to launch three rounds of tenders for the development of 6.8 GW of renewable energy in the country. As per the schedule, the first cycle will be launched by the first week of February 2021. Under the first round, 2.6 GW of solar and wind capacity will be auctioned. Enel Green Power, a subsidiary of the Italian energy giant, Enel, has announced that it has signed a joint venture partnership with the Qatar Investment Authority to develop and exploit renewable energy resources in countries south of Saharan-Africa. Under the agreement, QIA will acquire a 50 per cent stake in four projects which are under construction and being developed by Enel Green Power in South Africa.
