Egypt’s General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) has partnered with Polish company Hynfra to develop a green ammonia production facility with an initial investment of $1.6 billion. The first phase of the plant will be powered entirely by renewable energy, such as solar and wind. Surplus electricity will contribute to Egypt’s national grid, while the facility will export its output to the European Union under long-term agreements.

The project is part of a broader initiative by Hynfra, which plans to build five green ammonia plants across Central and Eastern Europe, with Egypt selected as a key location. The facility will also integrate green hydrogen production, energy storage, and water desalination technologies.

In addition, Egypt is advancing its renewable energy sector through legislative measures like the Green Hydrogen Production Projects Incentives Law and a “golden license” program to streamline approval processes. The initiative supports the EU’s goal of securing sustainable energy supplies, with a target to import 6 million tons of green hydrogen and 4 million tons of green ammonia by 2030.
