Georgia Power has received approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) for five new utility-scale solar power purchase agreements (PPAs) under the Clean and Renewable Energy Subscription (CARES) 2023 programme. These projects, with a cumulative capacity of 1,068 MW, will be developed and operated by third-party companies selected through the CARES 2023 Request for Proposal, which was earlier approved under the 2022 Integrated Resource Plan.
The projects will be located across Georgia. These include a 25-year PPA for a 260 MW solar project in Mitchell County, a 30-year PPA for a 200 MW solar project in Coffee County, a 20-year PPA for a 183 MW solar project with a 91.5 MW battery energy storage system in Wilkinson County, a 20-year PPA for 200 MW solar project in Jefferson County, and a 20-year PPA for 225 MW solar project in Laurens County.
The CARES programme enables eligible commercial and industrial (C&I) consumers to procure a pro-rata share of renewable power generation in line with their sustainability goals. The five projects were finalised through a competitive process managed by Georgia Power with oversight from an independent evaluator and the PSC staff. These solar projects are expected to be operational by 2028.
REGlobal’s Views: According to Georgia Power’s 2025 IRP, it has an initial target to procure 1,100 MW of new renewable resources through competitive bidding. Further, the plan includes a total procurement of up to 4,000 MW of new renewable resources by 2035. These new renewable energy projects will help Georgia Power to diversify its energy mix and ensure greater reliability for customers.
