EC approves €150 million Romanian energy storage scheme

The European Commission (EC) has approved a €150 million Romanian state aid scheme to support electricity storage deployment, in line with the Clean Industrial Deal. The scheme will support the installation of at least 2,174 MWh of new electricity storage capacity in Romania. Additionally, the support will be provided as investment aid in the form of direct grants for the development of new standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS).

IFC finances Olavarría wind and transmission project in Argentina

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has announced financing support for Petroquímica Comodoro Rivadavia S.A. for the development and construction of the Olavarría wind farm in the Buenos Aires province of Argentina. The total project cost is reported at $275 million. It involves the installation of 29 wind turbines supplied by Vestas, with a total installed capacity of 185.6 MW.

Tunisia floats tender for solar-plus-storage project

The Republic of Tunisia’s Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy has floated a tender for the development of a solar-plus-storage project. It will consist of a 300 MW solar plant with a 150 MW/540 MWh battery energy storage system. Located in Bazma in the governorate of Kebili, it is a part of the country’s national renewable energy development programme. The deadline for bid submission is October 14, 2026.

RGREEN INVEST and Renalfa join forces to develop renewable projects across Europe

RGREEN INVEST, through its INFRAGREEN equity funds, and Renalfa Solarpro Group have entered into an agreement to establish a joint venture (JV) named Renalfa Power Clusters (RPC). The partners have jointly committed €200 million in equity to the JV. The JV company will finance the development and construction of a renewable energy portfolio valued at approximately €800 million.

274 MW Madawaska wind project in Canada begins construction

The 274 MW Madawaska wind project in Quebec has reached financial close, enabling the start of construction. The project is being developed by EDF power solutions Canada, Alliance de l’énergie de l’Est, and Société de gestion éolienne de la Madawaska Inc. Financing has been arranged through a consortium comprising Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, National Bank of Canada, Desjardins Group, and KfW IPEX-Bank.

Lyra Energy secures financial close for 255 MW solar project in South Africa

Lyra Energy, a joint venture of Scatec in South Africa, has achieved financial close for the 255 MW Thakadu solar project and has commenced construction. The project will be implemented in two phases. Construction activities for the first phase have begun, while the second phase is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026. The commercial operations date for the first phase is expected during the first half of 2027.

New Jersey Can Lower Utility Bills by Scaling Energy Efficiency, Not Cutting Its Funds

Families in New Jersey are struggling with high energy bills and badly need effective policies to help. The average residential electricity price in the state climbed by a third from June 2023 to June 2025, driven largely by increased demand and regional delays in building new capacity. An executive order recently issued by Governor Mikie Sherrill seeks to tackle this challenge, directing the Board of Public Utilities to consider changes to reduce utility bills. It includes a call for regulators to identify opportunities to increase support for energy efficiency programs serving lower-income ratepayers.

Bank of Baroda raises Rs 100 billion through green bonds in India 

Bank of Baroda has raised Rs 100 billion through green infrastructure bonds to support long-term financing for renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure project in India. The Series I Long-Term Green Infrastructure Bonds received bids worth Rs 164.15 billion. The bids were more than three times the base issue size of Rs 50 billion. The bank had also provided a greenshoe option of an additional Rs 50 billion.

Vena Group commits KRW 1 trillion for South Korean renewables

Vena Group has signed an MoU with Chungcheongnam-do and Taean-gun in South Korea to develop large-scale green energy projects in the province, with a particular focus on Taean-gun. The company plans to invest approximately KRW 1 trillion by 2030 to develop utility-scale renewable projects, including offshore wind projects. Once operational, the projects are expected to generate more than 1.6 TWh of electricity annually.

Arevon commissions 430 MW Kelso solar project in Missouri

Arevon Energy, Inc. has commenced operations at the 430 MWdc Kelso solar project located in Scott county, Missouri. The company developed and constructed the project and will also own and operate it.  It represents an investment of more than $500 million. The project has been developed in two phases. It is expected to generate sufficient electricity to supply power to more than 62,000 homes annually.

PPC and METLEN to develop 1.5 GW BESS across Europe

PPC Group and METLEN Energy & Metals have entered into a joint venture (JV) agreement to develop battery energy storage systems (BESS) across Romania, Bulgaria and Italy. The agreement provides for the creation of a JV company in which both will hold an equal 50 per cent stake. The collaboration will focus on the development, construction and operation of a BESS portfolio with a total capacity of up to 1,500 MW/3,000 MWh.

J-POWER begins operations of 220 MW offshore wind farm in Japan

Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (J-POWER) has announced the commencement of commercial operations at the Kitakyushu Hibikinada offshore wind farm in Japan. The project is located in the Hibikinada sea off the coast of Wakamatsu-ku in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka. The total installed capacity of the project is 220 MW, of which 88 MW is owned by J-POWER. The wind farm comprises 25 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 9,600 kW.

Argentina launches 700 MW BESS tender

The  Energy Secretariat of the Ministry of Economy of the Nation of Argentina has announced a national and international call for proposals to deploy battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects at critical nodes across Argentina. The current phase targets the installation of 700 MW of BESS capacity with an estimated investment of $700 million. CAMMESA will oversee the bidding and implementation process.

TotalEnergies divests 789 MW German BESS portfolio

TotalEnergies has signed an agreement with Allianz Global Investors to sell a 50 per cent stake in a portfolio of 11 battery energy storage system (BESS) projects currently under construction in Germany. The portfolio has a total capacity of 789 MW/1,628 MWh, and represents a combined investment of approximately €500 million. The completion of the transaction remains subject to customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions.

Boralex Inc. and Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation (SNGRDC) have announced the commercial commissioning of the 300 MW/1,200 MWh  Hagersville battery energy storage park in Ontario, Canada. Borea and A6N General Partnerships, majority-owned by SNGRDC in partnership with Aecon, conducted construction and civil work activities at the site.

The Government of Tanzania and Agence Française de Développement (AFD) have signed a financing agreement worth €130 million with Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO). The soft loan will support the development of Tanzania’s first grid-connected solar project and upgrades to the national transmission network, transitioning towards a smart grid system.

Australia’s Energy Shift: AEMO publishes draft 2026 Integrated System Plan

To efficiently manage the long-term power system development, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), in December 2025, released the draft 2026 Integrated System Plan (ISP). The draft 2026 ISP reaffirms that renewable energy, connected by transmission and distribution, firmed with storage and backed up by gas, remains the least-cost pathway to supply secure and reliable electricity as coal retires through 2050. Translating this plan into reality requires coordinated action to overcome delivery constraints.
