TotalEnergies, a French oil and gas giant has begun the development of solar projects with a total capacity of 263MW in the city of Guillena, in the Andalusian region of Spain. Reportedly, TotalEnergies will construct a total of five solar plants, namely the 51 MW Postigo, the 52 MW Arbotante, the 52 MW Pilastra, the 53 MW La Noria and the 55 MW La Carrascosa.

Overall, the estimated investment in the solar plants is around $213.8 million. The five facilities will use over 400,000 solar panels to provide enough renewable energy to power more than 150,000 homes which will prevent 140,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The construction stage will create more than 800 direct and indirect jobs in the region. Additionally, the company and the Guillena City Council have decided to partner on promoting local employment and introducing vocational training programmes.

In September 2023, TotalEnergies finalised an agreement with Air Liquide for the long-term supply of TotalEnergies’ refinery in Gonfreville, Normandy, France, with green and low-carbon hydrogen. Air Liquide planned to construct and run the 200-MW Normand’Hy electrolyser, with half of its capacity going to the Gonfreville refinery and the remaining 100 MW going to customers in the Normandy industrial region and supporting low-carbon transportation. Reportedly, Air Liquide invested over $429 million to construct its Normand’Hy electrolyser.
