Key highlights of this paper by UK’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero are:
-Renewable electricity generation dropped 4.9 percentage points to 46.3 per cent of total generation in the first quarter of 2025
-Wind generation provided 28.5 per cent of the total generation, short of the 38.1 per cent provided by gas.
-Renewable generation capacity increased by 6 per cent on the same period last year, slightly below the average growth rate of the last three years.
-UK energy production fell 2 per cent last year, mainly due to a fall in gas output stemming from the maturity of the basin, and low wind output from lower wind speeds.
-Nuclear output increased, albeit from a record low during the first quarter of 2024. Oil output also increased, up 4 per cent on last year, and in contrast to recent decreases
-Total final energy consumption (excluding non-energy use) was 3.1 per cent higher compared to the first quarter of 2024
