EIB and Haizea ink €35 million green loan to expand wind energy component production in Europe

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and Haizea Wind Group, a Spanish firm that manufactures wind energy components, have inked a €35 million green loan. The loan will allow Haizea to implement advanced manufacturing technologies, automate and digitalize processes, and continue research and development for the production and assembly of large metal structures for wind turbines such as wind towers, monopile foundations, and offshore wind park transition pieces.

ACCIONA Energía sells hydro portfolio for €287 million to Elawan Energy

ACCIONA Energía has finalised a deal to sell 100 per cent of Acciona Saltos de Agua, S.L. group to Elawan Energy, a subsidiary of ORIX Corporation, with the transaction being debt-free. Furthermore, Crédit Agricole serves as the financial advisor. The ASA portfolio, comprising 23 hydroelectric plants with a total capacity of 175 MW in Aragón, Cantabria, and Cataluña, is expected to close by year-end pending foreign direct investment approval.

Ameresco Sunel Energy to build 560 MWp solar project in Greece

Ameresco Sunel Energy is the contractor in Lightsource bp’s 560 MWp Enipeas solar project in Greece. The Enipeas project is in the Larissa and Fthiotida regions and is expected to be complete within 18 to 24 months. The project consists of two clusters: Skopia, a 400 MWp southern cluster, and Kalithea, a 160 MWp northern cluster, with approximately 970,000 photovoltaic modules to be installed.

EIB lends €390 million to DEPA Commercial for solar farm construction in Greece

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has announced that it will lend €390 million to DEPA Commercial SA for the construction and operation of solar farms in Greece. This funding is expected to cover 75 per cent of the total cost of the new solar sites, which is estimated to be up to €521 million. DEPA Commercial will develop photovoltaic (PV) farms in western Macedonia, Thessaly, and central Greece.

Shell to set up 100 MW hydrogen production system in Germany

Shell has concluded the final investment decision to advance REFHYNE II, a 100 MW renewable PEM hydrogen electrolyser at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland in Germany. Using renewable electricity, REFHYNE II is expected to produce up to 44,000 kg of renewable hydrogen daily to partially decarbonise site operations, with the electrolyser scheduled to commence operations in 2027.

Masdar and Endesa to collaborate on €1.7 billion renewables project in Spain

Masdar announced a partnership with Endesa for 2.5 GW of renewable energy projects in Spain, pending regulatory approvals. Masdar will invest €817 million for a 49.99 per cent stake in the projects worth €1.7 billion. Masdar plans to acquire a portfolio of 48 solar plants with a total capacity of 2 GW and both the companies plan to add 0.5 GW of battery energy storage to the projects.

TotalEnergies has concluded its final investment decision for a 100 MW/200 MWh battery storage project in Dahlem, North Rhine-Westphalia. This is the first project approved by TotalEnergies from its recent acquisition of Kyon Energy, a german battery storage system developer, which was finalised in February 2024. Furthermore, the project has an investment exceeding €75 million.

EnBW to invest €1 billion in Germany’s hydrogen network 

EnBW plans to invest about €1 billion to create and expand a national hydrogen core network. This network is expected to be built by 2032 and will play a crucial role in the future European Hydrogen Backbone, according to German government plans. The core network will deliver hydrogen to key industrial centers, power plants, and generation facilities, and will also establish routes for importing hydrogen from abroad.

SSE Renewables and Gilkes Energy to develop Loch Fearna Pumped Storage in Scotland

SSE Renewables plans to develop a new pumped storage hydropower project at Loch Fearna in Scotland’s Great Glen, through a 50:50 joint venture with a consortium led by Gilkes Energy. The project will be situated at the western end of Glengarry, about 25 km west of Invergarry. The site will be adjacent to SSE Renewables’ Loch Quoich reservoir within the Great Glen hydro scheme. According to the joint venture terms, Gilkes Energy will lead the project’s development under a development services agreement with SSE Renewables.

Macquarie to acquire 100 per cent stake Lynn and Inner Dowsing wind farms 

Macquarie Asset Management has announced plans to acquire an additional 39.25 per cent stake in the Lynn and Inner Dowsing offshore wind farms from funds managed by BlackRock, bringing its total ownership to 100 per cent. Lynn and Inner Dowsing are adjacent offshore wind farms situated off the coast of Lincolnshire. The wind farms have a total installed capacity of around 194 MW, producing enough electricity annually to power over 160,000 UK homes.

Boralex inks PPA with Statkraft for 106 MW Limekiln wind farm in Scotland

Boralex Inc. has secured a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the 106 MW Limekiln Wind Farm near Thurso in Caithness, Scotland. This 3-year PPA with Statkraft will cover the period from the wind farm’s expected commissioning by the end of 2024 until the contract for difference takes effect in April 2028. The construction is advancing according to plan, with turbine components being delivered to the site over the summer.

SSE and Equinor to agree preliminary terms for Dogger Bank D

SSE and Equinor, co-developers of the proposed Dogger Bank D fourth phase of Dogger Bank Wind Farm, have filed a Scoping Report to the Planning Inspectorate. This comes after the Transitional Centralised Strategic Network Plan (tCSNP2) was released by National Grid ESO in March 2024. It contained confirmation that Dogger Bank D will connect to Birkhill Wood, a projected 400kV substation in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Rolls-Royce supplies 32.6 MW battery at Zeewolde wind farm in Netherlands

Rolls-Royce Holdings has announced an order for a 32.6-MW/65.2-MWh battery storage system to supplement the Zeewolde wind farm in the Netherlands. The turn-key contract is from Battery Park Zeewolde and includes a 10-year maintenance agreement. Rolls-Royce’s mtu EnergyPack QG system is set to launch in the summer of 2025. It will help the client in the markets for grid services and energy trading.

Nestlé Deutschland to source 70 per cent of electricity from renewable energy

About 70 per cent of Nestlé Deutschland’s electricity will now be sourced from solar panels and wind farms within Germany. This ensures that production facilities in Hamburg, Neuss, and Biessenhofen will continue to operate on fully renewable power. Nestlé Deutschland plans to procure 80 GWh of renewable electricity annually by the end of 2026, through power purchase agreements with BKW and other energy providers
