Formosa 2, a Taiwanese offshore wind farm with 376 MW of capacity, has started its commercial operations. The wind farm is situated between four and 10 km off the coast of Miaoli County in the north-west of the country, which is next to Formosa 1, which has 128 MW of capacity. The wind farm’s entire 47 turbines were installed in January of this year, and the full grid connection occurred in March. The capacity of each turbine is 8 MW.

The wind farm will produce enough energy each year to provide almost 380,000 Taiwanese homes. Facilities for operations and maintenance (O&M) have been set up in Taichung City and Taichung Port. The amenities include a state-of-the-art control centre with round-the-clock monitoring and maintenance crews. The wind farm is owned by Japanese utility JERA, which owns 49 per cent. Furthermore, Macquarie Asset Management’s Green Investment Group has 26 per cent and the remaining 25 per cent is held by Synera Renewable Energy.

In December 2022, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners received 500 MW–600 MW of capacity in the first round of Taiwan’s Round III Zonal Development offshore wind auction. The capacity was given to CIP’s Fengmiao offshore wind project, which was connected to the country’s energy grid in 2027. The offshore facility was CIP’s third project in Taiwan and is situated 35 km offshore of Taichung City.
