Masdar inks PPA for 200 MWac floating solar project in Malaysia

Masdar has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to develop a 200 MW floating solar project at the Chereh dam in Pahang state, Malaysia. The project will be implemented by a consortium led by Masdar, along with Citaglobal and Tiza Global, and the agreement has been executed with Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Malaysia’s national utility company. The project was awarded under Malaysia’s Large Scale Solar Cycle 5+ programme.

ANDRITZ secures contract for pumped storage plant in Thailand

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has awarded a contract to ANDRITZ for the replacement of two pumped storage units at the Srinagarind hydropower plant with new, state-of-the-art units. The plant is located on the Kwai Yai River in Kanchanaburi province, Thailand and has a total capacity of 720 MW comprising three Francis units and two pumped storage units.

Saudi Arabia awards 4.5 GW of renewable energy projects

Saudi Arabia’s Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has awarded five renewable energy projects under the sixth phase of the National Renewable Energy Programme, with a cumulative capacity of 4.5 GW. The awarded projects include one wind and four solar projects, with total investments exceeding $2.4 billion. SPPC will oversee predevelopment studies, tendering, and power purchase agreements for the projects.

EDF inks CPPA for 440 MW offshore wind project in Taiwan

EDF Power Solutions has signed a 30-year corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) with Taiwan Smart Electricity & Energy Co. Ltd. (TSEE) for the Wei Lan Hai Changhua offshore wind project (WLHC). EDF Power Solutions is the majority shareholder in the WLHC project, which was awarded in 2022 and has a total installed capacity of 440 MW. TSEE is the newly established government-backed electricity aggregator in Taiwan.

Microsoft to procure 100 MW of green power from Shizen in Japan

Shizen Energy has finalised renewable energy purchase agreements (REPAs) with Microsoft for four solar projects in Japan, reaching a total contracted capacity of 100 MW. The agreements follow Microsoft’s initial deal for the Inuyama solar power plant, following which three additional 20-year contracts have since been signed. The solar projects are situated across the Kyushu and Chugoku regions.

Siemens Gamesa to supply turbines for offshore wind project in Taiwan

Synera Renewable Energy (SRE) Group has selected Siemens Gamesa to provide 35 turbines of 14 MW each for the 495 MW Formosa 4 offshore wind project located off the west coast of Taiwan. The turbines will be supplied from the company’s nacelle production facility in Taichung. Situated off Miaoli County, the Formosa 4 project was allocated capacity in the first auction round of Phase 3 Zonal Development in 2022.

500 MW South Korean offshore wind project secures offtakers

Taean Wind Power, a joint venture between Vena Energy and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), has signed two power purchase agreements (PPAs) totalling 500 MW with Korea West Power and Gangneung Eco Power. The PPAs cover 300 MW with Korea West Power and 200 MW with Gangneung Eco Power. These contracts secure long-term offtake for electricity generated by the Taean offshore wind project.

Yunlin offshore wind farm begins commercial operations in Taiwan

The Yunlin offshore wind farm of the Yunneng Wind Power Co. Ltd. has started commercial operations with an installed capacity of 640 MW. The project comprises 80 wind turbine generators. It is located in the Taiwan Strait, 8 to 17 km off the west coast. The wind farm has obtained the required electricity business licences, complied with regulatory requirements, and met contractual obligations under its financing agreement.

India cancels two offshore wind tenders

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has scrapped two offshore wind energy tenders with a combined capacity of 4.5 GW. The tenders have been cancelled due to a lack of developers’ participation. The first tender was for sea-bed lease rights to develop 4,000 MW of projects, while the second was for a 500 MW offshore wind project to be built off the coast of Gujarat in India under the viability gap funding (VGF) scheme.

Record low bids in Indian green ammonia auction

NTPC Renewable Energy (NTPC) has won Solar Energy Corporation of India’s (SECI) auction to supply 70,000 tonnes per annum of green ammonia under the strategic interventions for green hydrogen transition (SIGHT) programme (Mode-2A, Tranche-I). The company secured the capacity at a tariff of $591 per metric tonnes (MT). Under the agreement, green ammonia will be supplied to Krishana Phoschem in Madhya Pradesh.

Ørsted secures financing for Greater Changhua 2 project in Taiwan

Ørsted has reached financial close on a project finance package to raise around TWD 90 billion for the Greater Changhua 2 project. It is a 632 MW offshore wind farm and is located about 50 to 60 km off the coast of Changhua. The project consists of Greater Changhua 2a and Greater Changhua 2b. Greater Changhua 2a is operational, whereas Greater Changhua 2b is under construction and is expected to be commissioned towards the end of 2025.

Plug Power has expanded its partnership with Allied Green Ammonia (AGA) with a 2 GW electrolyser deal tied to a sustainable fuels project in Uzbekistan. The deal will be executed during the Tashkent International Investment Forum. Plug Power’s electrolyser technology has been selected as the foundation of a $5.5 billion green chemical production facility in Uzbekistan. ACWA Power has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and strategic partnership agreements (SPA) with key Malaysian entities. The company has inked an MoU with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) for the development of up to 12.5 GW of power generation capacity by 2040. The SPAs and heads of terms have been inked for joint development agreements with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Terengganu Inc., and UEM Lestra.

South Korea launches solar and offshore wind tender

South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE) has launched tenders for 1 GW of solar and 1.25 GW of offshore wind projects. The ministry will open a solicitation for fixed-bottom offshore wind projects by June. After that, it will determine the quotas for floating offshore wind and onshore wind capacity. Out of the total 1.25 GW on offer, approximately 500 MW will be reserved for public-led offshore wind bidding.
