Vehicle Registrations in EU: Factsheet

The effects of global supply chain shortages due to the covid epidemic and the war in Ukraine continue to be felt in the European car market, with the roughly 2,300,000 total new car registrations in the first quarter of 2022 equating to a 12% drop compared to the same time period in 2021. The average share of battery electric (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) increased only
marginally in the first quarter.

EV adoption in the US for a net zero economy

The stage is set for significant electric vehicle (EV) growth in the coming decades, but even the most optimistic scenarios bring dramatic plot twists. The Biden administration has set a goal for the U.S. economy to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. Achieving that goal will require a nationwide transition to EVs and clean energy. While EV adoption is surging, reaching many goals set by automakers and policymakers will require extensive changes that go far beyond just the vehicles on the road.

ICCT Briefing: Zero Emission Vehicle Deployment in Latin America

EV adoption is underway in some Latin American markets for the passenger vehicle segment. The 2020 EV sales shares for passenger vehicles are scaling up in Costa Rica and Colombia at 0.6% each, and in Chile at 0.5%. Mexico and Brazil have higher EV sales but lower market shares due to their bigger market sizes. Similar to developing countries in other regions, electric passenger car uptake is still at a very early stage in the Latin America.

The European power sector in 2020: renewables overtake fossil fuels

Renewables overtook fossil fuels to become the EU’s main source of electricity for the first time in 2020.This is an important milestone in Europe’s clean energy transition. At a country level, Germany and Spain (and separately the UK) also achieved this milestone for the first time. The transition from coal to clean is, however, still too slow for reaching 55% greenhouse gas reductions by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050. While Covid 19 had an impact in all countries, its impact on the overall trend from fossil fuels to renewables was quite limited. The rise in renewables was reassuringly robust despite the pandemic, and the fall in fossil-fired electricity could have been even more dramatic, had it not been for such a bounce-back in electricity demand and the worst year on record for nuclear generation.
